Why Visual & UI Designers and even UX Designers should Doodle a lot?
Updated: Jun 7, 2022
Regardless what do you think, start to doodle, even now. Stop for the moment and take a pencil, pen, marker and see what is inside you...discover inside out. Become real designer not copy and paste maker, ok? You might discover genius inside. But to discover, you have to allow to overcome the fear. The biggest fear of failure belongs to PERFECTIONIST.
"Tell a boy who loves to draw fun scenes that he has no talent and Walt Disney will stand in front of you".
by Joseph Murphy
and if you allow to be "foolish" adult by awaking your inner child, creative artist inside you, you might become another extraordinary designer, artists... you never know until you try...
IF YOU DO NOT DOODLE, DRAW AND DESIGN YOURSELF AND YOU USE ALREADY PRE-MADE CUSTOM DESIGNS ONLY FROM ICONS TO ILLUSTRATIONS, YOU ARE LESS CREATIVE THAN A SPIDER IN MY BATHROOM. AT LEAST SPIDER DOES HER/HIS JOB - THE BEAUTIFUL ART-CRAFTY SPIDERWEB ALL BY HER/HIMSELF, WHICH EACH TIME AMAZED ME. 🕸🕷
WE CANNOT BE GOOD AT EVERYTHING
You do not have to create calligraphy handmade fonts and icons and illustrations and logos, but at least choose one area of Visual Design or UI Design and JUST DO IT.
Choose the one, which you ❤️ THE MOST.
have a paper, the best random notebook and the pencil, pen or marker, most likely black or blue, also random
breath (if you haven't done it in years)
look at the page - does it scary you? is empty?
take a writing/drawing tool into your dominated hand or for a fun, less dominated and
put the first dot, first line....until first doodle is done
AND FLOW & FLY
1. thought 2. idea 3. from first line to first sketch
or opposite 1. first line and comes the 2. thought and quickly follow up 3. the idea
It might happen that you will have a set for the same idea, follow it...it is a good sign
do not freeze and do not fight
NEVER EVER BE PERFECTIONIST
Because you never ever gonna get there
I met few perfectionist and they are crap in design as they only focus on the final outcome
so they end up by using the predesigned free or paid UI elements
SAD 🥺 BUT TRUE STORY of many out there...
SORRY GUYS, YOU ARE NOT DESIGNERS, YOU JUST PUT PIECES TOGETHER AND EVEN THIS IS DIFFICULT FOR YOU DO SO
BECAUSE YOU DO NOT DOODLE, DRAW AND DESIGN YOURSELF.
SIMPLE. AS BLACK AND WHITE.
HOW TO START?
Before choosing, which visual/ui design to focus, to be a good at, taste different ones and love the process along the way, the discovery process, the journey without looking at the final destination as you might surprise yourself.
DISCOVER YOURSELF GENTLY
ALLOW TO HAPPEN NATURALLY
DO NOT FORCE IT
LET IT BE
FOLLOW THE PATH
OBSERVE THE MIND DO NOT SPEED UP THE JOURNEY
ENJOY THE JOURNEY
DO NOT SKIP STOPS ALONG THE WAY
TAKE NOTEBOOK EVERYWHERE - Pocket size, B5 or A4 max
INSTEAD INSTA endless similar photos, boring FB feeds, and other crap social media addictive b.s. as random strangers, peoples, your "friends" updates, stories of somebody cats, coffees, kids, clothes, holidays (read as WASTE OF TIME) START TO DOODLE ANYTIME
LIKE THIS BELOW FOR EXAMPLE
YOU MIGHT ADD THE COLOUR
Low Fidelity Wireframes as part of Doodling of UX DESIGNERS
YOU CAN USE ANYTHING AND ENGAGE ANYONE TO THSI FUN DOODLE TIME
And instead of using someone else design you create your own even as simple as this is better to be your own than customised or redesigned.
ONLY THAT TIME YOU CAN CALL YOURSELF ACTUALLY DESIGNER. OTHERWISE YOU ARE JUST SEARCH, COPY AND PASTE MAKER.
